Assembling when Dry
Fibers give great cohesion to dry paper clay. The slabs must be cut with a sharp tool, scissors, or a saw. Straight cuts are made by scoring the surface with a sharp knife. Then bend where scored to separate the two parts. Rounded cuts on a slab a few millimeters thick can be made with scissors. A small saw is needed to cut thick slabs. Smooth the edges with a wet sponge to remove tool marks and settle any clay dust from the cut.

To assemble the dry slabs, they must be moistened about 0.4 in. (1 cm) along the edges. Dip them in water for about thirty seconds. If you canât do this due to their size, apply water repeatedly with a brush or sponge. Then cover both surfaces to be joined with paper clay slip.
Quick, accurate work, without going back over it, ensures the best adhesion. Place the surfaces to be joined against each other when the paper clay slip is still liquid and shiny. Hold in place until it dulls. Then smooth with a finger and reinforce the joins with soft paper clay.

1 Score the surface of the porcelain paper with a sharp tool against a lath.
2 Place the cut line on the edge of the table and gently bend down to separate the two parts.
3 With a brush, repeatedly apply water to the surfaces intended to be in contact when joined.
4 Coat the edges with paper clay slip.
5 Place the two slabs together on the still soft slip.
6 Wait a moment for the slip to compact, then gently smooth the joint. Continue joining the other sides one at a time.
